2023 Little Family Adventure - On the way home & Epilogue

On the way home & Epilogue

It is interesting to be heading back home.  Having my own  bed, water when I want it, bathrooms available when I want them, and being able to drive my Miata again sounds great!  However, now facing reality with church and temple callings along with dealing with moles in the back yard doesn't sound that appealing .

It is sad to say goodbye to the Grand-kids and Ryan & Monica.  They have been fun traveling companions.

We got up early and caught the 5:15 bus to the airport, which actually left 5 minutes early.  (Lucky we weren't late)  Got to the airport and no one was around the British Airways area.  Eventually we got checked in.  (and they checked our bags for free).  We bought a chocolate croissant and a fresh squeezed Orange Juice and we are on our way.

We flew over Iceland and Greenland.  It was pretty cool looking out the window on the ice covered mountains.

Epilogue

Traveling through 20 countries in two months with your son and his kids – does it get any better than that?   (Well, for the 20th country I counted Slavakia, which we took a train through and did not stop.   We did see a lot of Slavakia and quite a few towns the train stopped at.  Ryan and his family continued after we left, to Ireland.  So they have a solid 20 countries and 21 with Slavakia.  PS.  I am not counting London, England, since we are only in the airport .)

This is the first time we have been to Eastern Europe.  I think we would  have gone to Prague on our own, but not likely to go to other countries.  It is really due to tagging along with Ryan.  He was AMAZING, booking all those trains and AIRBNBs.  Then getting us to them.  He did a great job getting everything all planned out.  It was really him who did all the work.

It was fun to travel with his family.  We got to know the kids a little better.  It was great to travel with my family.  It was also nice to also join Becky and her family in Paris and Prague.  We really miss canceling our trip with them just before the COVID.  It was nice that they could join us for those two cities.  It is nice to see Ryan and how he is being a responsible father and how kind he is to his family.  As we get older, one of our greatest desires is to have a positive influence on our grand-kids.  It is such a challenge raising kids in today’s world.

It is fun to see the similarities and differences between people from other countries and ours.  There are more similarities than differences.  Little boys like to collect sticks and skip rocks in water, all over the world.  Nowadays, everyone likes to play on their Smart Phones.  There are kind people everywhere, and there are people who are not kind everywhere.  Luckily, there are much more kind people.  Foods, architecture, and language are different, but people are just people.   It seems like in each country there are some stereo-typing of personalities, but there are always exceptions.

It is interesting looking at the history of the countries of Eastern Europe.  Many of the countries are quite new and still defining themselves.  Which seems odd, since a lot of their buildings are older than Columbus .  World War II changed a lot of the country's history.  But it is still changing.  Many have only been a country since 1990’s but their history goes way back.

We feel this is a trip of a lifetime and appreciate Ryan for inviting us.

2023 Little Family Adventure - Venice Italy

2023 Little Family Adventure - Venice Italy

 Venice Italy

We arrived in Venice to see a cute AIRBNB   It has 4 bedrooms and a kitchen and 2 bathrooms.

Out for dinner

We went out to the nearby mini market.  I don't know if they just catered to a certain ethnic group or what.  We could not find anything to eat for breakfast or dinner except for some ramen for the kids and Karen a chocolate bar.  It is weird shopping in strange little markets.

Anyway the kids got ramen and were delighted.  The adults went out to an Italian restaurant and enjoyed some great pizza, lasagna and pasta.  Ryan picked a great place.  Everyone was happy.

PS.  Karen even found her Lemon Soda that we enjoyed on our last trip to Rome.

Exploring Venice

Venice is one of the most unique and fascinating cities in the world!

Why do we love Venezia!  Top 5 things.

Well, let's start with the things I don't love about Venezia.

First Least Liked -  I don't love the crowds in San Marco Square.  (I do think the buildings are really cool, but not the crowds.

Second Least Liked -
The trinket shops.  (Now I do have to agree that my Grand-kids might think this is #1 or #2.   They have been looking for the perfect fan. )

Now the count down -
In #5 position -  all the cool churches and buildings.

This church was really interesting

It is hard to see in the photo, but the ceiling is AMAZING!  Not quite as cool as the Sistine Chapel , but pretty darn cool.

In #4 position - the cool bridges

Well, this next one is not a bridge, but it rivals the Fan-Tan Alley in Victoria BC.

In #3 position - the pizza and the calzones.  (after a long time looking around )

Oh!  Oh!  Oh!  Oh Yeah!
Don't forget the Lemon Soda in Italy.!

Side note - a little trivia.  Our cover charge and our drinks cost more than our pizza and calzones.  (However, I must say the A/C and the lemon soda may have been worth it.)

In  #2 position the gondoliers (the pizza and calzone almost won this position, but this was the first time I have been on a gondola ride.)

My first and maybe only gondola ride.

Not a gondola - but honorable mention.
Looks like a boat freeway.

Doesn't this shot remind you of the Italian Job !

Of course in #1 position -  Venice Gelato

First - the hard part is picking out the flavor

Then the anticipation of eating it.

You need to sit down with a gelato to really enjoy it.

Saying goodbye to Venice

We even had to use up our last Eurail pass for the ride in and out of Venice .

2023 Little Family Adventure - Hrusevje Slovenia

2023 Little Family Adventure - Hrusevje Slovenia

Hrusevje Slovenia

We are staying at a working organic farm.  The place is called EkoTurizem.   The place we are staying is amazing.  I am super-impressed with the craftsmanship of the place.  It has a very nice work trim.  We have two decks, one looking towards the mountains and another overlooking the play area.  We ate dinner in the main hotel area and the food was great!

So far, what I have seen of Slovenia is impressive.  It is interesting that Slovenia has only been a country since 1991.   It is quite a young country.  There are about 2 million people in Slovenia, pretty small.

Exploring the area

The little farm and hotel are kind of interesting .

Inside our place

This was kind of interesting.  It was a bee house with bee hives on the side.

The play area is pretty fun.  Two trampolines, soccer field, sand box and various play toys

Skocjan Caves - Slovenia

The area nearby has two caves.  We went through the Skocjan caves.  The caves were pretty cool.  Lots of stalactites and  stalagmites, similar to Mammoth and Carlsbad Caves.     One of it's claims to fame is one of the largest canyons in the world inside.

Hanging out before the tour

Screen shot from the internet.  No photography was allowed in the cave.

At the end of the tour

Ryan and Monica decided to take the long way back.
Grandma and Grandpa and the kids decided to take the elevator, which was more of a funicular

The slackers taking the elevator.

Besides the normal thing in this series of caves is that it has a huge canyon inside.  I think it has one of the largest cave canyons in the world.
The bridge is 47 meters high above the river below.  In 1965 it flooded up to a level of 97 meters.
Photo taken from internet.

A couple tired boys

We ended the day with Ryan and Monica cooking up some steak, mashed potatoes, and roasted vegetables.  What a great meal.

We ended up with some cheesecake.  Life is pretty good.

Lake Bled - Slovenia

We went to Lake Bled for the day before heading back to Zagreb.  The lake was very beautiful.  The kids went in for a swim.  The lake has an island in the middle and a cute church on the island.  Apparently this island is the only natural island in the whole country.

The town is very cute.  It has lots of trees and cute homes.

Kids playing cards in the sand (well pebbles)

Off to Zagreb, Croatia

The countryside is beautiful green fields with a church in every small village.

Zagreb Croatia

We pile all our luggage and check into a hotel in Zagreb. Croatia.
Unfortunately they have some construction problems and we need to take a bus tomorrow to Venice.
Ryan and Monica return the van.

The kids got their reward for McDonald's

McDonald's looked like  the teenage hangout for Zagreb.  Tons of teenagers.  16 kiosks for ordering and all filled.

Our kids were also in heaven .

Adults got their night out

There was a fun little place that had great and very interesting food.  Karen and Monica had a bao-bun sandwich which was interesting as well as yummy.  Ryan had a chicken katsu sandwich and Bud the pork tacos.  All were good and quite 'showy' .

The square is the adult hangout
They had a large town square.  It looked like the adult hangout.  Lot's of people hanging around.

And of course -- Gelato on the way home.

On the way to Venice

Since there was construction, we had to take the bus to Venice.  The breakfast at the hotel was much better than expected.  It took me back to the old Cruise food days.  There was about everything that you could want.  We haven't had a breakfast that good for some time, so it tasted good.

The bus trip turned out pretty good.  It was fun to see a lot of Slovenia.  We made a stop in Ljabjjana, the country's capital.  It is the smallest capital city of most any in Europe.  It has about 240 K people and of that 50 K are students.  It has their major university there.  The town was nice and clean.  The area traveling through Slovenia was beautiful.  Maybe not quite as dramatic as Switzerland, but lots of mountains and green trees.
